Komon Kimono Rental in Asakusa

Komon is the kimono to pick if this is your first time, if you plan to walk a lot, or if you simply want to look like you belong on the street rather than at a ceremony. The pattern repeats in small motifs across the whole cloth, which is exactly what makes it casual — and what makes it photograph well from any angle.

Why do most visitors to Asakusa choose komon?

Because it is the everyday kimono, and Asakusa is an everyday place. Formal styles such as homongi or furisode are beautiful, but they read as “attending something”. Komon reads as “living here for the afternoon”, which is what most people actually want from a day around Senso-ji and Nakamise.

It is also the easiest style to move in. The half-width obi that comes with komon is lighter and less structured than the fukuro obi used with formal kimono, so sitting down in a café or climbing the temple steps stays comfortable.

What does the ¥6,000 price actually include?

Everything you need to walk out of the door: the kimono, the under-layer, the half-width obi, zori sandals, a matching bag and basic hair styling. There is no separate “set fee” and no charge for the accessories.

Two things are optional. Make-up is ¥4,500 per person and needs to be booked in advance, because it takes a dedicated slot. A more elaborate hairstyle is ¥1,700 per person and can normally be added when you arrive.

If you want the obi tied in a more decorative way than the standard half-width knot, an otaiko knot with a fukuro obi is ¥1,500 and a decorative kawari knot is ¥3,000. Both are decided at the counter once you have chosen your kimono.

How long does dressing take, and when do I get the kimono back off?

Allow about an hour from arriving to walking out, including hair. On busy weekends it can be a little longer, which is another reason to take a morning slot.

The set comes back by 17:00 the same day. If you want the evening as well, you can extend to a next-day return for ¥1,100 per person and bring it back by 14:00 the following day.

Can I add a photo session to a komon rental?

Yes, and komon is the style our photographers recommend for outdoor sessions, precisely because it does not overdress the street. A 30-minute outdoor session is ¥10,000 for 50 unedited photos and 5 retouched ones; the popular 60-minute session is ¥16,000 for 100 unedited and 10 retouched.

Photo sessions must be reserved in advance — they cannot be added on the day. Unedited photos reach you by cloud download within 2 days, and retouched images within 5 business days of you choosing your favourites.

Booking a komon set

Walk-ins are welcome and we hold around 500 kimono in stock, but guests with reservations are dressed first, and weekend mornings fill up. A reservation deposit of ¥1,000 covers one to four guests; ¥2,000 covers five to eight. A refundable security deposit of ¥10,000 per person is taken when you leave the store and returned in full when the kimono comes back.
