A day in Asakusa runs differently with a child in kimono, so this page answers only three things: whether we can dress them, what to tell us first, and what time you need to be back.

From what age can a child wear a kimono?

We go by height, not by age. Children’s kimono are stocked for boys and girls from ¥5,500, and sizing is specific, so please send your child’s gender and height when you book.

The children’s size range is narrower than the adult one. Telling us in advance means the fitting starts from a kimono that already fits, rather than from a search.

What should I tell you when booking?

Three things: your child’s gender and height, which kimono the adults would like, and whether anyone wants make-up. With those in hand, the visit starts at the rail instead of at the counter.

Make-up is ¥4,500 per person, is reserved in advance, and cannot be added on the day. A more elaborate hairstyle is ¥1,700 per person and can usually be added at the counter.

What does the children’s price include?

The kimono, zori sandals, a matching bag, basic hair styling with a hair accessory — and the dressing itself. Nothing called a “set fee” appears later.

Only four things can be added: make-up at ¥4,500, elaborate hair at ¥1,700, an obi knot upgrade, and extending the return to the next day. Decline all four and you walk out for the price on the plan page.

How should we plan the day?

Start early and count backwards from the 17:00 return. Allow an hour for dressing and hair, then Sensoji and Nakamise, with room for one proper break in the middle. If you want the evening as well, extending to a next-day return is ¥1,100 per person, with the kimono back by 14:00 the following day.

We hold a security deposit of ¥10,000 per person while you are out and return it in full when the kimono comes back. The clothes you change out of are stored free, so nobody carries a bag of clothes around Sensoji, though valuables stay with you. Large suitcases cannot be stored — space in the store is limited — so use a coin locker at the station or the ecbocloak app before you arrive.

Can we just take photos instead of walking?

Yes. A 45-minute studio session is ¥10,000 and covers both the tatami room and the portrait backdrop, with 50 unedited photos and 5 retouched images. The weather is irrelevant indoors, and it finishes before a small child runs out of patience.

Sessions are booked in advance and cannot be added on the day. One photographer covers up to 4 guests, so tell us early if the family is larger.

What if my child is unwell that morning?

Cancelling or moving your booking is free until 20:00 the day before your visit. Changes and cancellations after that cannot be accepted, bad weather included.

The reservation deposit that confirms a booking is ¥1,000 for one to four guests and ¥2,000 for five to eight. Arriving more than 30 minutes late may mean we cannot dress you, and that visit is not refunded. With a small child, book the earliest slot of the morning and leave a little slack in the schedule.

We size by height rather than by age. Children's sizing is specific, so please send your child's gender and height when you book — it makes the fitting much faster on the day. Children's kimono start at ¥5,500, for boys and girls.

Once the child's kimono is settled, the next question is what the adults wear. The kids page adds up a family of three for you.
