What time do I have to return the kimono in Asakusa?

Return time is the single thing most people get wrong when they plan a kimono day in Asakusa, because it decides how far you can walk and how late you can stay for photos. The rules below are the ones our staff actually apply at the counter.

When exactly does the same-day return close?

17:00 on the day you rent. That is a hard counter time, not a “roughly five o’clock”. Plan to be back at the door about ten minutes early: changing out of a full set takes a few minutes, and on weekends there is often a short queue at the changing rooms.

Practically, an 09:00 start gives you a comfortable eight-hour window — enough for Senso-ji, Nakamise, a tea break and a walk along the Sumida river without rushing. Booking after lunch shrinks that window fast, so if your plan includes an outdoor photo session, take a morning slot.

What if I want to stay out past 17:00?

If you already know you want the evening as well, the easiest moment to say so is at the counter before you set off. Keeping the kimono overnight costs ¥1,100 per person, and the set comes back by 14:00 the following day. This is the option people take for evening illuminations along the river or a dinner in kimono.

Two details worth knowing. First, the overnight fee is per person, so a group of four pays it four times. Second, the next-day deadline is earlier than the same-day one — 14:00, not 17:00 — so build the second morning around it rather than assuming you have until the evening again.

What happens if I am simply late?

If you arrive after 17:00 without telling us in advance, the overnight fee of ¥1,100 per person applies anyway, and you return the set by 14:00 the next day. Nothing is confiscated and nothing extra is charged on top; we would just rather hear from you first so the evening staff know to expect you.

Note that the refundable security deposit — ¥10,000 per person for standard sets — is returned when the kimono comes back. A late return delays that refund to the following day, which matters if you are leaving Tokyo the next morning.

What happens to my own clothes and luggage?

The clothes you change out of are kept at the shop free of charge while you are out, so you are not carrying a bag of jeans around Senso-ji. Valuables are the exception: please keep those with you.

Large suitcases are the other exception, because there is not enough room in store for them. Leave one in a station coin locker, or use the ecbocloak app to find a nearby drop-off point, before you come in to be dressed.

What is the cancellation deadline?

Free cancellation and date changes close at 20:00 the day before your booking. After that we cannot accept a change or a cancellation, bad weather included, so it is worth checking the forecast the evening before. The reservation deposit that confirms the booking is ¥1,000 for one to four guests and ¥2,000 for five to eight. If you are more than 30 minutes late to your appointment we may not be able to dress you at all, and that slot is not refunded.

Planning your day backwards from 17:00

The easiest way to build the schedule is to start from the return time and work back. Allow 60 minutes for dressing and hair at the start, 30 minutes to walk to Senso-ji, and 15 minutes to change back at the end. Whatever is left is your actual sightseeing time, and it is almost always less than people assume.

If you want the longest possible day in kimono, book the first slot of the morning and add the overnight option at the counter. That combination turns a seven-hour rental into roughly a full day and a morning.
