Two stores, two different jobs
Both stores are in Asakusa, Taito City, Tokyo. They work from the same price list and share one phone number. What differs is where they stand and what each is built around.
Shoken (Main Store) is named after shoken — pure silk. Silk is what this store is built around, so if you want to choose by fabric and by formality, or simply take your time comparing, start here.
Kaminarimon Store is the closest one to Kaminarimon, the great lantern gate most people picture when they picture Asakusa. Nakamise-dori and Sensoji begin right there, which is why it tends to be chosen on short days, when the walk starts the moment you finish changing.
Which one to visit is really a question of the order you plan to walk in that day. Nearest stations, exits and walking times for both are listed further down this page.
What we carry
The range runs from antique-feeling pieces to sheer, contemporary lace: komon, iromuji, homongi, tomesode, furisode, nishaku-sode, and men’s and children’s kimono. Obi, hair ornaments, zori sandals and bags are chosen to go with the kimono.
Photography, without a second trip
Photography carries straight on from dressing. We shoot on location in the streets of Asakusa and in the studio inside the store, so there is no need to change and then travel somewhere else. Because getting dressed and being photographed stay close together, the hair and the obi are still exactly as they were set when the pictures are taken.
Languages spoken in store
Our staff serve guests in English, Chinese and Japanese. Dressing is hands-on work, so being understood is part of feeling comfortable.
Keeping things clean
Underwear is washed after every use; kimonos are professionally cleaned and disinfected. What happens between one guest and the next is the part nobody sees from outside, which is exactly why it is written down here.
Opening
We are open every day of the year. Opening hours are shown in the store panel below; returns and the shape of the day itself are covered in the guide section of this site.
